Victoria Falls Guided Tour: Walk the Rainforest Trail
A guided tour of Victoria Falls takes you along the rainforest trail on the Zimbabwean side, where viewpoints open one after another onto the full width of the falls. The spray rises hundreds of metres and drifts back down as steady rain, feeding a strip of forest that grows nowhere else in the region. Your guide walks it with you, stopping at each viewpoint to explain how the gorge was cut, what the river is doing at this time of year, and where the light will catch a rainbow. It is an easy walk on a made path, and it remains the single best way to grasp why the falls are counted among the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
What Is the Victoria Falls Guided Tour?
The tour follows the marked trail through the rainforest opposite the falls, taking in viewpoints from Devil’s Cataract at one end to the Danger Point overlook at the other. Distances are short and the path is level, so it suits most levels of fitness. What changes the experience is the guide. Rather than simply pointing, they explain the geology of the Batoka Gorge, the history of the site and the meaning of Mosi-oa-Tunya, and the seasonal cycle that turns a thundering wall of water in April into an exposed rock face by November.
Water Levels, Spray & What to Wear
How wet you get depends entirely on the season. Between February and May the Zambezi is at its fullest and the spray falls like heavy rain across much of the trail, so a poncho and a waterproof bag for cameras and phones are essential. From September to December the water drops, the spray thins, and far more of the rock face and gorge structure becomes visible. Comfortable walking shoes are enough underfoot. Park entry fees apply and are normally paid on arrival.
